Louis
Fischer (1896–1970) was an American journalist and writer. He wrote extensively
on international politics and important political movements.

His observations of Gandhi were later incorporated into his famous biographical
work The Life of Mahatma Gandhi.

to Champaran in Bihar in 1917 and his struggle for the rights of poor indigo
sharecroppers.

3. Background of the Chapter
Before
teaching the chapter, explain the historical background.
The
peasants of Champaran in Bihar were forced by British landlords to cultivate
indigo on a portion of their land. The arrangement was exploitative and caused
great hardship to the farmers.
Rajkumar
Shukla, a poor
and determined peasant, wanted Gandhi to visit Champaran and help the farmers.
Gandhi
eventually went there, investigated the situation and challenged the unjust
system through truth, courage and non-violent resistance.

6. Period 1 – Introduction and
Historical Background
Step 1: Introduce the Title
Write on
the board:
INDIGO –
LOUIS FISCHER
Ask:
“What is
indigo?”
Explain
that indigo is a plant historically used to produce a blue dye.
Then
introduce the problem faced by the farmers of Champaran.
Step 2: Rajkumar Shukla
Explain
that Rajkumar Shukla was a poor peasant from Champaran.
He
persistently requested Gandhi to visit Champaran.
Key Teaching Point
Rajkumar
Shukla's persistence brought Gandhi to Champaran.
Students
should understand that Shukla was not a powerful politician. His strength was
his determination.
7. Period 2 – Gandhi's Visit to
Champaran
Gandhi Arrives in Champaran
Gandhi
reached Champaran to investigate the problems of the peasants.
He first
gathered information rather than immediately starting a confrontation.
Gandhi and the British Officials
The

Gandhi
refused to leave because he believed that helping the suffering peasants was
his moral duty.
He was
prepared to face the consequences of disobeying the official order.
Classroom Question
Why did
Gandhi refuse to obey the order to leave Champaran?
8. Period 3 – The Champaran Struggle
The Peasants Gather
When
Gandhi appeared before the court, a large number of peasants gathered outside.
Their
presence showed that Gandhi had awakened confidence among them.
Important Concept: Fearlessness
One of the
most important ideas in the chapter is:
Gandhi's
greatest achievement was not merely obtaining financial compensation; he helped
the peasants overcome fear.
The 25% Refund
After
negotiations, the landlords agreed to refund 25 percent of the money
they had illegally taken from the peasants.
Students
may ask:
“Why did
Gandhi accept only 25 percent?”
Explain
that Gandhi considered the agreement significant because the landlords were
forced to surrender their prestige and authority. The peasants realised that
the landlords were not all-powerful.
9. Period 4 – Social Reform and
Wider Meaning
Gandhi did
not restrict his work to the indigo problem.
He also
encouraged:

Sentence 1

Translation:

Sentence 2
“He said,

Sentence 4
