3. Introduction of the Lesson
Introduce Pearl S. Buck and explain that The
Enemy is set during wartime Japan.
Tell students:
The story is not merely about an American prisoner and a
Japanese doctor. It is about a difficult choice between patriotism and
humanity.
Dr Sadao had studied surgery and medicine in America and
later became a famous surgeon and scientist in Japan.

Period 1 – The Dilemma
Step 1: Sadao and Hana
Explain:

Sadao is a Japanese surgeon.

Step 2: Discovery of the wounded man
A man emerges from the mist and collapses on the beach. Sadao
and Hana discover that he is a wounded white man.
They later discover that he is an American sailor and a prisoner
of war.

Expected answer:
Because the wounded man is an American enemy, but Sadao is a doctor and cannot
allow a dying person to remain untreated.

Period 2 – The Operation
Explain how Sadao and Hana bring the wounded man into the
house.
The servants oppose helping him. Yumi refuses to wash him,
while Hana eventually washes the wounded man herself.
Sadao decides to operate because the man will die without
surgery.
During the operation:

remains professionally focused.

bullet is removed.

American survives.
An important transformation occurs when Sadao unconsciously
calls the patient “my friend”, temporarily forgetting that he
is an enemy.
Discussion:

humanitarian duty ultimately overcomes his hatred of the enemy.
Period 3 – Conflict and Resolution
1. The Servants Leave
The servants believe Sadao and Hana have forgotten their
national loyalty because they lived in America.
Discuss:
Why do the servants oppose Sadao?
Because they see the American primarily as an enemy, whereas
Sadao sees him as a human being and patient.
2. The General
Sadao tells the General about the prisoner.
The General suggests that private assassins could secretly
kill the American.
But the assassins never come.
3. Sadao Helps the Prisoner Escape
When the American becomes healthy enough to leave, Sadao
arranges a boat, food, clothing and supplies so that he can escape to safety.
The American finally escapes.
At the end, Sadao wonders why he could not kill him.
